Tribal Wedding
1 x 60 minutes for ABC Australia (2009)
Filmmakers Larry Gray and Mary O’Malley and their son Ryley left their middle class life in Sydney to try living in a traditional village on Tanna Island in Vanuatu. They were attracted by the Namal tribe’s sustainable lifestyle, and the simplicity and happiness of their lives. They were invited to have a traditional Namal wedding in the village which involved ‘kastom dress’, a feast with plenty of pigs, taro and island cabbage, and lots of dancing – and even some good natured whipping. Larry loves the life in Namal, but Mary is not so sure she can leave her Australian city existence.
